Impregnation – protection against moisture.
Genuine leather wicks away moisture well, but too much water can cause cracking and discoloration. Therefore, one of the most important elements of caring for genuine leather shoes is their impregnation. Impregnation not only protects against moisture but also against dirt. For impregnation, you can use special products for genuine leather available on the market, which create an invisible protective barrier. For grain leather shoes, you can use an impregnant in the form of a liquid, cream, paste, foam, or wax, while for suede and velour shoes – a spray/aerosol. Make sure to choose the right impregnant for the material your shoes are made of.
When to impregnate leather shoes?
Genuine leather shoes can be impregnated immediately after purchase, but we recommend repeating this activity regularly, e.g., every few weeks, depending on the frequency of wear and weather conditions. Systematic impregnation will significantly improve the durability of the shoes. Also, remember to thoroughly clean and dry used shoes before impregnation.
Care with shoe cream and polishing.
To maintain softness and natural shine, leather shoes need nourishment. Shoe creams and pastes are ideal for this purpose, as they additionally protect the leather from cracking and drying out. Remember to choose the right product matched to the type of leather and its color. Apply the cream using a soft cloth or sponge, making circular motions. Leave it for a few minutes to allow the cream to absorb into the leather.
Polishing is the final step of care, which gives the shoes a glow. After applying the cream or paste, it’s worth using a soft brush or a flannel cloth and polishing the shoes until they achieve a pleasant shine.
Thanks to systematic and careful polishing, your shoes will maintain an elegant appearance. It is worth doing because frequent polishing protects the leather from micro-damage and gives it a more uniform color, and regular care allows for keeping the shoes in excellent condition. Finally, it is also worth paying attention to the proper storage of shoes.
